EVALUATING THE EASE OF DOING BUSINESS INDEX ON BUSINESS PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIA’S AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

Abstract

This research evaluates the Ease of Doing Business (EDB) index on business performance in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. The EDB is a framework created by the World Bank but implemented by host countries to provide a conducive business environment. Thus, through the EDB, several infrastructures, business permits, licenses, etc., are provided for business take-off. This research evaluates the performance of the EDB in the agricultural sector. The research sought to identify the successes and challenges of the EDB in the agricultural sector. The research adopts qualitative analysis, which collects data through interviews with 7 farmers. Since the EDB seeks to create a conducive business environment, the research also uses business environment tools as PESTLE analysis and Porter’s 5 forces to evaluate the EDB. The research discovers that the EDB is an essential framework that aids businesses. It’s successes are within the Economic and Legal business environment factors, as the government has implemented several economic-friendly policies and made easy access to licenses/permits for business start-ups. The challenges lie within the political, technological, and social environment. These challenges create insecurity, the absence of solid infrastructure, and a lack of manpower in the agricultural sector. The research further recommends steps through which these challenges can be solved.
