Item A comparative analysis of celebrities’ endorsed posts on Instagram pages: a study of two football stars: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and two singers and actresses: Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande, endorsed posts on Instagram(Griffith College, 2023) Adeyemo, AdewunmiCelebrity endorsement is becoming a norm in the advertising world, and every organisation is taking advantage of this great practice. The traditional media utilises this strategy in product promotion, and it has yielded great success. Social media is the new communication weapon in the hands of advertisers, its great power to break boundaries and reach the most obscure places on earth has made it the best way to reach out to audiences far and wide. Celebrities and social media influencers are using social media to bring their loved ones together on a platform. Instagram is one of the most popular platforms for celebrities to communicate as well as endorse products. Their followers react as well as accept their testimonials about the products. This study investigates the Instagram pages of four celebrities with the most followers on Instagram to know whether their profession is connected to the product endorsed. This study was carried out by establishing a quantitative content analysis of the Instagram pages of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Ariana Grande, and Selena Gomez, by studying their posts within seven months. It was found that only the two male, celebrities Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi had endorsed posts connected to their profession as a footballer, while the other two female celebrities, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande did not have any of their endorsed post connected to their profession as singers or actresses. Also, the study revealed that Lionel Messi’s endorsed picture and video posts attract more likes than Cristiano Ronaldo’’s posts. Also, Selena Gomez’s endorsed picture and video posts attract more likes than Ariana Grande’s posts.Item A Framing Analysis of Partisan Media’s Coverage of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting.(Griffith College, 2023) Van Zyl, MariusAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2021 saw a record high for gun-related injuries and deaths in America. This included both homicides and suicides. 2021 is the most recent year for which detailed statistics is availabe. A total of 48,830 people died from gun related injuries, the majority (54%) were categorised as suicide, while 43% were categorised as homicide. Eight out of ten homicides involve a firearms (Gramlich, 2023). These figures far exceed other developed Western nations. America is also the only nation in the world where the number of civilian owned firearms exceed the number of people within the country. (Fox et al., (2023). Statistics like these are the reason that the US’s debate about firearm control has raged over decades. However, the debate has remained gridlocked, with no major changes being made to gun policy. The debate has become highly politicised, with voices from The Democratic Party calling for stricter gun control, while voices from The Republican Party argue for the protection of the right to bear arms provided by the Second Amendment. Mass shootings have become a phenomenon that is correlated with America. While mass shootings have occurred in other developed countries, such as Britain, Australia, Norway etc. However, no other developed Western nation saw more than 8 occurrences over a period of 22 years. America had over 100 public mass shootings within this timeframe (Fox et al., 2023). When mass shootings occur in the US, the inevitable talks about gun control follow with no real resolutions being identified and implemented. One such event occurred on 14 February 2018, when Nikolas Cruz entered the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School armed with an AR-15 and killed 17 people before being apprehended by police later that day. Events such as these receive large amounts of media attention and the gun debate that ensues in the aftermath is closely covered by media. Media in the US are divided along partisan lines, much like the gun debate. Their political affiliation often determines how they will cover an event such as a mass shooting. The New York Times is a world renowned agenda setting newspaper that is affiliated to The Democratic Party, while The Washington Times is a conservative paper affiliated with The Republican Party. This paper will conduct a qualitative framing analysis of the coverage of The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting by The New York Times and The Washington Times to assess if their political alignment influenced the way they framed this event. It will attempt to identify the dominant frames present in each newspaper, how the papers’ use of sources contributed to the framing. The goal is to determine if political biases were evident in their coverage.Item A radio documentary on “body image representation of women in the media(Griffith College, 2023) Chijuka-Etiaka, Yvonne AnwulikammaSocial media and traditional media can negatively and positively impact the body image of women. Among many Irish sports fans, there are different attitudes towards the Irish national rugby and football teams respectively. Many of these opinions are influenced by factors other than results on the pitch. This research study aims to address the idea of Irish national identity as embodied by Ireland’s two most popular national sports teams, and to understand how these perceived collective identities are (a) projected onto these teams by the media and (b) shaping public opinion towards both teams. I conducted a mixed methods research study that involved a content analysis of 757 articles produced by the Irish Times and the Irish Daily Star in relation to both teams on selected dates during the calendar year 2017. I also conducted an online multiple-choice survey whereby 229 respondents from the Irish public shared their perspectives on the Irish rugby and football teams, Irish national identity and their level of sports media consumption. This study sought to address six research questions as listed below, alongside some of the key findings. 1. What percentage of recent media coverage related to the Ireland rugby team and the Republic of Ireland football team features the theme of Irish national identity? 37% of the selected media coverage related to the Ireland rugby team and the Republic of Ireland football team features the theme of Irish national identity. However, there are some limitations in scope of certain elements of this study, so further extensive research would be welcomed in this regard. 2. Does that percentage of media coverage showcase each team in a negative or positive light? The study found that 93% of the coverage was positive and 7% was negative. 3. According to the Irish sports media, what are the main differences between how the Irish rugby and football teams respectively embody national identity? This research suggests both teams have similar work-ethics and embody similar levels of humility, but the main difference between both teams according to the Irish sports media with regard to national identity is that the Irish football team embody passion to a larger extent. 4. How does negative media coverage of each team impact public interest in Irish international rugby and football matches? Due to the limited scope of this research study, the findings do not offer a conclusive insight in relation to this research question. Further, more in-depth research in this regard would be welcomed. 5. According to Irish rugby and football supporters, what are the main differences between how the Irish rugby and football teams respectively embody national identity? These findings could be seen as an indication that in relation to national identity, with a majority sample of male Leinster-based supporters, rugby fans have a lower opinion of the Irish football team than that of the football fans towards the rugby team. However, further research would be required to accurately explore this in more detail involving a more diverse demographic of Irish supporters. 6. Do Irish rugby and soccer supporters factor their own perceptions of national identity into their opinions towards the national teams? The scope of this research study cannot sufficiently address this final research question and further investigation would be needed in order to posit an accurate response.Item A study to examine the role of social media within public relations.(Griffith College, 2019) O'Neill, ElaineSocial media quickly became popular since its introduction over a decade ago. It was quickly adapted into society and has changed how we act and interact with others. Not only has it changed how we interact as individuals it has changed how businesses and consumers interact with each other. It has provided a new tool for public relations practitioners to communicate directly with their audiences. However, as social media is a relatively new tool for businesses it is important to examine how and why it is used within companies. This study set out to examine what the role of social media is within public relations by examining how companies used their social media accounts, what content they posted and examining the opinions and uses of social media among public relations professionals. The research questions addressed in this study are: 1. What is the role of social media within public relations? 2. Is the pattern of social media use consistent across these different businesses and participants? 3. Is third party media coverage and ‘word of mouth’ communication still important to companies and consumers? The study followed a mixed methods approach combining both qualitative and quantitative research. To collect this data an online analysis (content and engagement) of three companies social media accounts was conducted followed by two interviews with public relations and communications professionals and a further survey among seven other public relations and communications professionals. The results of this research indicated that social media is used within public relations for relationship building, two-way communication, reputation management, content control and word of mouth communication.Item A Tale as Old as Time: a radio documentary on how Millennials understand romantic love(Griffith College, 2019) Sperger, LenaThis radio documentary focuses on Generation Y’s (people born from 1980-2000, also called the Millennials) understanding of romantic love and how this shapes their adulthood. The documentary features different people from this age group, both male and female. Through their stories, the documentary outlines their hopes and fears regarding romantic love as well as the social pressure they find themselves under. Today’s society has various definitions of romantic love relationships and we can see that these characterisations of love change among cultures but also generations. One that distinguishes itself significantly from others in its view on love and relationship is the Millennials. Therefore, this thesis will examine how Millennials understand romantic love relationships and how they influence them in their adulthood. The main thrust of this thesis is the definition of love as well as its origins. Furthermore, this thesis presents the creative decision which have been made in order to produce the radio documentary A Tale as Old as Time. Findings from this thesis suggest that Millennials are choosing a different perspective on love compared to older generations. This is influenced not only by social media but also on their perception on marriage, social norms, commitment and religious fidelity. Contributors in the documentary all related to their upbringing, social and cultural influences, how they define romantic love relationships and how they learned to love.Item A visual and linguistic approach to the representation of celebrity news on Instagram as observed on the accounts of E!News, Entertainment Tonight, and Page Six(Griffith College, 2023) Bonori, AlessiaThis study investigates the visual and linguistic portrayal of celebrity cheating scandals on Instagram, exploring the interplay between news circulation on social media and the reporting techniques of entertainment journalism. As a result of the digitalisation of news production and circulation, celebrity journalism has adapted its business strategies and reporting techniques to the new platforms emerging in the media landscape. By conducting a mixed quantitative and qualitative content analysis of 23 celebrity news posts, the present paper determines the means through which cheating scandals are visually and linguistically depicted on the Instagram accounts of three entertainment news platforms: E!News, Entertainment Tonight, and Page Six. Employing academic research on images’ role in the news and on journalistic reporting styles as a springboard, this study identifies a range of visual and linguistic tools employed in the cheating scandal posts. Taking into account the sensational nature of celebrity journalism, as well as the business strategies and application-specific features of Instagram, this paper determines that the use of visual and linguistic tools in the posts contributes to the creation of sensationalism by functioning as attention-grabbing devices. This dissertation delves into a variety of interrelated aspects concerning the digitalisation of news circulation, the ad revenue system of social media platforms, and the sensational reporting style of entertainment journalism. The content analysis of celebrity cheating scandal posts on Instagram, has served as an important method to foreground some of the issues and lacunae in the contemporary news media, such as the lack of transparency and the unfair advertising revenue systems on social media. This dissertation highlights the importance of spreading more awareness among consumers with regard to news production and dissemination across the ever-expanding media landscape.Item An Analysis of Suicide Reporting in Three in Print Daily National Newspapers – Irish Independent, Irish Examiner and the Herald, over two twelve month periods, 1999 and 2016(Griffith College, 2017) Whelan, Anne MarieSuicide reporting can be dilemmatic, whereby the Irish in print newspapers have to make on the spot decisions as to whether they should publish a suicide news story that is in the public’s interest, even it might cause further upset to the families involved. Thereby, suicide reporting can become a dilemmatic issue for the newspaper involved, who has to strike a balance between producing good quality suicide reports which comply with media guidelines or breaching the guidelines and produce poor quality suicide reporting, just to satisfy the public’s curiosity. Therefore, this research aims to analyse suicide reporting in three Irish in print daily national newspapers, over two twelve month periods, 1999 and 2016, so as to analyse the quality, quantity of suicide reporting and to give a retrospective look at how suicide reporting has changed, over two twelve month periods, 1999 and 2016. This dissertation focuses on analysing suicide reporting in three Irish in print daily national newspapers – Irish Independent; Irish Examiner and Herald, so as look at how suicide reporting on can stigmatise and/or sensationalise the issue of suicide in Ireland. This dissertation has met the research aim through a Triangulation research method approach, which is a mix of quantitative and qualitative content analysis research methods. This research has produced an analysis of the relevant literature pertaining to the analysis of suicide reporting, which discusses the use of media guidelines; news frames, news values and images in suicide reporting, in in three in print newspapers – Irish Independent; Irish Examiner and the Herald, over two twelve month periods, 1999 and 2016. This research reveals that whilst the coverage of suicide was high in 1999, it raised awareness of suicide in a negative way because the newspapers did not adhere to media guidelines, which could have an effect on imitative suicide behaviour in vulnerable people, who are susceptible to the way suicide is reported on in print newspapers. The main conclusions which can be drawn from this research is that the high amount of coverage given to suicide in 1999 coincided with the high suicide rate in 1998 and this made suicide newsworthy. Moreover, it can be concluded that the quality of suicide reporting in 2016, in comparison to the corresponding reporting period in 1999, has significantly improved and can be attributed to all three daily national newspaper’s compliance to media guidelines on suicide reporting which are enforced by Headline, the Media Monitoring Programme. This research argues for the continued compliance of the in print daily national newspapers to media guidelines on suicide reporting and to foster a more open and destigmatised attitude towards suicide in the Irish in print newspapers and the general public.Item An Analysis of the Development of Nigerian Media Law since Independence, with a Focus on how the State Transitioned between Democratic and Authoritarian Regimes.(Griffith College, 2023) Olajumoke Folashade, TitiloyeSince Nigeria's independence in 1960, the development of media law has mirrored the country's socio-political dynamics, which have oscillated between democratic and authoritarian regimes. This dissertation offers a thorough analysis of the development of Nigerian media law in the context of these transitions. The primary purpose of this study is to comprehend how the country's media legislation has changed and adapted in response to shifts in governance and the broader sociopolitical environment. Initial findings suggest that, while the press enjoyed relative freedom during the early years of independence, it was subject to significant restrictions during military rule. The media's ability to serve as a watchdog was frequently constrained by laws enacted during the authoritarian period. However, transitions to democratic governance ushered in renewed vigour for press freedom, albeit with obstacles, as the media played a crucial role in the democratic consolidation process of the nation. In addition, this dissertation assesses Nigeria's media laws in the context of international media legislation and press freedom standards. A comparative analysis reveals areas of congruence and divergence, highlighting the unique challenges and factors that influenced the formulation of media laws in Nigeria. In addition, the impact of international conventions and treaties on Nigerian media law is examined, shedding light on the interplay between local contexts and international norms. Nigeria's journey from post-independence euphoria through periods of authoritarian rule and successive returns to democracy provides valuable insights into the complexities of media law evolution in a post-colonial African context. This research highlights the importance of a free press in the consolidation of democracy and the need for a balanced legal framework for the media that adheres to international norms.Item Are New Media Tools Strengthening Investigative Journalism in Nigeria?(Griffith College, 2020) Igweze, Chisom MichaelNew media tools are increasingly being applied to various aspects of journalism practice. Investigative journalists the world over are finding in these tools new opportunities for easing and improving their performance. In Nigeria where there is obviously need to improve investigative journalism culture, there seems to be little focus so far by scholars on how much investigative journalism may be benefitting from these tools. Against this backdrop, this study focused on the extent new media tools may be strengthening investigative journalism in the country; that is, roles these tools may be playing in promoting this sort of reportage among practitioners. The research objectives were to find out: how informed Nigerian journalists are about the utility of new media tools in investigative journalism; whether they utilize these tools for investigative journalism; the ways the journalists possibly utilize the tools in advancement of investigative journalism; and factors possibly affecting use of new media tools for investigative journalism in the country. Ten investigative journalists working in print, broadcast and online-only news organisations were interviewed. Findings indicated that the journalists are informed about roles of new media tools in investigative journalism. The respondents were found to ave actually utilised some of these tools in the reportorial aspects of their investigative journalism engagements including fact-finding, fact verification, story writing, photo taking, and storage of data, as well as for non-reportorial aspects like accessing training, applying for grants, and entering for awards. They have, however, yet to adequately explore these tools for crowdsourcing and collaboration with colleagues as well as for shielding the identity of anonymous sources, encryption of conversations with sources, data organization, data analysis, and monitoring of the Internet for trending issues and developments. Results further revealed that factors like poor phone and Internet networks, unsteady electricity supply, financial handicaps, nonchalance of employers towards updating skills of journalists, and laidback attitude on the part of journalists themselves hinder adequate utilization of new media tools for investigative journalism in the country. The study concluded that the growing Internet culture in Nigeria will have the effect of exposing journalists to more knowledge and skills for stronger adoption of new media tools, giving hope for a much better future for investigative journalism in the country.Item Caution: Children at Play. A radio documentary on the decline of children’s free play opportunities in Dublin, Ireland(Griffith College, 2017) Cooke, CaoimheResearch in human development indicates that play encompasses an important role in the development and learning of children. It is through play that children discover the world around them and begin to internalise their experiences. In this increasingly fast-paced world, children are busier than ever before. They are faultlessly caught up in a results-based society, that is more competitive and demanding of them than any generation that went before them. Parents, too, are struggling to strike a balance between keeping up with this frenzy and nurturing the growth of their precious children. The document lays out the research path of the radio documentary: ‘Caution: Children at Play.’ It refers to relevant literature and investigates how children play in our modern, increasingly digitised world. The dissertation also outlines the creative and technical process involved in the production of ‘Caution: Children at Play’. It presents the researcher’s findings that a lack of unstructured play opportunities in childhood has led to a generation of children who have less of a relationship with nature, and are less inclined to be creative. The documentary and supporting document seek to prove that over-supervisation and over protection is taking away child’s free choice and the very thing that makes their behaviour play. The fear exists that this will lead to a lack of essential coping skills when these children reach adulthood.Item Divorce Uncovered A radio documentary on how the emotional trauma after divorce affects future relationships(Griffith College, 2023) Bischoff, AnnalenaDivorce is a personal experience which people hesitate to speak about in public. The study involved two separate elements: a content analysis and a survey. Study 1 involved a content analysis of four magazines over a three-month period from June 2017 to August 2017. Two male-audience targeted magazines and two female-audience targeted magazines were analysed. The magazines involved in this study were Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, Women’s Health and Women’s Fitness. The content analysis revealed that both men’s and women’s health-and-fitness magazines exhibit appearance-related content more so than health-related content. However, it was discovered that they promote different types of appearance-based messages. Men’s health-and-fitness magazines are more focused on muscle gain and bulking, i.e., getting bigger, whereas women’s health-and-fitness magazines are more focused on slimming down and improving one’s glutes. It appears that male-focused magazines are encouraging their readers to gain muscle in every area of their body and make it bigger and stronger, whereas female-focused magazines are encouraging their readers to slim down every part of their bodies but their glutes. The content analysis also determined that both men’s and women’s health-and-fitness magazines largely fail to promote better health. The majority of the so-called health articles present in the magazines are mostly unproven ‘health myths’ with little or no research backing the claims. Similarly, only one health advertisement was present in the magazines analysed: P20 sunscreen. Study 2 involved a survey of 120 participants from an array of nine countries. The survey titled ‘Perceptions on Health and Fitness Survey’ proved that the majority of people are of the opinion that health-and-fitness magazines promote unnatural and unattainable physiques and contain airbrushed images. The results also indicated the majority of people who engage in physical activity do so for their health, wellbeing and enjoyment, not for appearance-related reasons, which contradicts the messages being put forward by both men’s and women’s health-and-fitness magazines.Item Effective Public Relations Practice for SMEs In Developing Countries: A Case Study of Nigeria.(Griffith College, 2020) Ibrahim, HadizaSMEs are essential to the growth and development of nations. Through the examination of various social media platforms, I intend to examine how individuals use such technological tools to revive the language and to assess the benefits of social media for promoting the more widespread use of Irish in daily life. By making the accompanying documentary bilingual, I can access a much wider audience through the use of sub-titles during the in-depth interviews of Irish speakers who use social media platforms daily with the intention of promoting the language. To date, there has been no in-depth analysis of the impact of social media on the development of the Irish language which prompted my personal interest in this project and encouraged me to examine if social media is being successful in making Irish “cool “ and trendy. This Dissertation by practice is a filmed, participatory documentary called “Gaeilge ar Líne”.
